GA, Sedation, Treatment planning and Emergencies in children

This workshop will address two topics. Firstly, the use of general anesthesia (GA) in paediatric dentistry. Although GA is a well-accepted technique for treating children, there are significant variations and services across the world. This workshop will address patient selection, medical implications, dental treatment planning options, and will discuss the commonly used techniques to anaesthetize children in paediatric dentistry. This workshop will also address induction techniques, maintenance of anaesthesia, recovery and post-op implications. Students will be able to discuss and justify their decision-making in a group setting.

The second part of this workshop will allow students to become involved with state of the art paediatric simulation equipment, discuss medical emergencies that may arise in the dental setting or during dental sedation scenarios. Attendees will have a chance to familiarize themselves with SimJuniorTM . For more information, please go to http://www.laerdal.com/au/SimJunior

A small group setting with limited numbers will maximize participation, engagement and learning for those attending. In this second part of the workshop participants will spend approximately 30-40 minutes in one of several different medical/dental scenarios.

The learning objectives of this workshop are:

  • Review current guidelines and indications on the use of GA in paediatric dentistry
  • Treatment plan efficiently for children receiving dental care under GA
  • Review and evaluate current anaesthesia techniques used in paediatric dentistry
  • Prepare for unanticipated medical emergency situations
  • Introduction to hands on state-of-the-art simulation equipment.

Course material includes written clinical case reports, review of protocols and guidelines in the use of GA, notes of medical scenarios used during simulation as well as up to date literature on these topics.
